Sakagura

sakagura has to be one of the best kept secrets in manhattan's restaurant underground.

with it being literally ... subterranean underground.

steven and i agree that the last few days has been an overindulgence in animal.

at momofuku's it was veal sweetbreads (this might sound pleasant but in fact you're eating pancreas parts) and tripe (stomach), and last night, perhaps one of the best beef tongues i've ever had.

the coolest dish of all however had to be the uni soup with boiled egg and salmon roe. next, chestnut glaze ice-cream dessert and green tea truffles and finally, the maguro tar tar topped with yuzu caviar.

the sake? ... we went with fruity and fragrant in the kumamoto tradition and passed over the "wings of japan" variety that retailed at almost a $100 a carafe.

and as for the bill ... much more palatable after longingly gazing into the windows of sushi yasuda for the first half-hour before we descended into the batcave.

so the question now remains ... can and will masa beat out sakagura in our next round of samplers?

2007 marks the year of the steakhouse tour (we're planning on hitting every major steakhouse in nyc to determine and settle the winner once and for all).

the suicide pool is in and my stakes are on markjoseph's.
